We are now both retired, so now is time for our long planned vacation to Italy. We are spending three weeks starting in Milan and ending in Rome with stops in Venice, Monterosso del Mar, Florence, and Assisi. Also, we hope to make a quick stop in Pisa to see the sites while changing trains.
No rental cars on this trip -- all feet and trains. We are really looking forward to the train trips where we can sit back and sip a drink and enjoy the scenery.

| Train trip from Milano to Roma |
There are two train companies in Italy that share the same rails. Trenitalia is the main state-run train company in Italy. It operates both high-speed routes along with slower regional routes. Italo Treno offers only high-speed train service.
The high speed rail between major cities are the Frecce (arrow) trains. The fastest is the Frecciarossa (red arrow) that we will take between Milan and Venice. The top speed is 300km/hour (190 mph).
Most cities have more than one train station and the station names are what the tickets and the announcements are based on. We will need to be ready for some confusion.
A pet peeve of ours is why in english we call a city by a different name than the locals. Why not use their name rather than making up one in english? Here are some examples:

See you in Italy!!
